THE ALCHEMY OF TANNIN AND IRON: INKS FROM MEDIEVAL RECIPES
For well over a millennium and a half, the reaction of tannins with iron formed the basis of writing ink for a large portion of the world. This was commonly called Iron gall ink and appeared jet black on the page. In these workshops we recreate this ink using medieval recipes as a basis to work from.
In these workshops, as well as going through the process of making iron gall ink, we explore other options for making ink when combining iron and tannin rich plant sources together. In addition time is given to making a writing implement in time honored ways.
Please do get in touch if you are interested in this workshop, we also offer the medieval series as a series of talks.
