PASTELS AND CRAYONS

What are pastels and crayons if not portable colour sticks? This unique way of being is what is so alluring and captivating about these pigment rich creative materials.

Pastels can be made with a range of pigments. We make pastels using foraged pigments, plant pigments, earth and human-made pigments.

In our workshops we take people all the way through from finding and processing pigments, to create beautiful soft pastels with just a few simple additions.

By making your own pastels, you can choose how you like them to be and, slightly waxy, very soft, in gradients of tones. We love making pastels and it is a wonderful craft to pass on.

To find out what pastel making workshops are coming up, have a look at our program.

Through many hours of experimentation with clays, chalks, and a wide range of pigments, we have developed a beautiful range of unique colours.

We are very lucky to be able to be working with an accomplished local pastel artist, to further develop our range of soft pastels, and to better learn how to pass this craft on to others.

In 2024, we launched a range of pastels called Earth Pastels. We proudly included a pastel made with our own foraged pigment, Galloway Gold (not the infamous beer made by Sulworth Brewers here in D&G.)

CRAYONS

Crayons can be made with various ratios of waxes to create differing grades of softness. We make ours with a mix of beeswax and soya wax. Wax crayons can be made with a whole range of pigments including foraged pigments and in our art packs, we always include one of our very special, ‘Galloway Gold’ crayons.

Once understanding wax crayons and pastels, the journey to oil pastels beckons. We are currently developing own oil pastel recipe and look forward to being able to share this in future workshops.
